April is here, and with it, Microsoft Fabric has prepared a set of important updates. As a platform that’s always looking to innovate, Fabric treats us to a variety of new and improved “dishes,” designed for every palate and every need in the world of data.
This month, Microsoft focused on key areas, bringing everything from “appetizers” that democratize access to artificial intelligence to hearty “main courses” for data scientists and data engineers, not to mention innovative “sides” for real-time intelligence and “desserts” that make integration easier.
Let’s explore together the highlights of Fabric’s “April Buffet” and how these new features can enrich your projects.
The House Starter: AI for Every Palate!
Every good buffet starts with a special starter, and in April, Fabric doubles down on one of its best: Copilot and the AI capabilities are now available starting with F2 SKUs! That means cutting-edge artificial intelligence has become more accessible, like a quality starter that lets more customers try it out and supercharge their projects.
The Hot Dishes Station: Bold Flavors for Data Science and Data Warehouse!
We’ve reached the most anticipated station of our buffet, with options aimed at meeting performance and innovation needs.
Dish 1: Wild Mushroom Risotto with AI (Low-code Data Science)
Data scientists can take advantage of the new Low-code AI tools in notebooks and in Data Wrangler (which is in Preview). These special “ingredients” boost productivity, letting you apply AI functions and transform data with much less code. It’s like a sophisticated risotto that, with AI-assisted preparation, makes exploring and enriching data a smoother, more intuitive experience.
Dish 2: Dry-Aged Grilled Picanha with an Efficiency Sauce (Data Warehouse GA Features)
For data engineers who appreciate robustness, Fabric Warehouse serves up a “picanha” (Brazil’s beloved top sirloin cap) cooked just right: several important features have reached General Availability (GA). Commands like ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN and sp_rename column, support for distributed #temp tables for efficient management of intermediate results, and the OPENROWSET and BULK INSERT functions for bulk data ingestion make data maintenance, optimization, and loading easier. These are tools designed to deliver performance and satisfaction, like a well-prepared prime cut of beef.
Dish 3: Light Migration Soufflé (Migration Assistant for Fabric DW - Preview)
And for anyone planning to bring their data into the Fabric Data Warehouse, Microsoft has prepared a “soufflé” that promises lightness: the new Migration Assistant for Fabric Data Warehouse, still in Preview. The promise is to simplify the migration journey, making the process less intimidating and more straightforward, like a soufflé that wins you over with its texture and ease of preparation.
The Sides and Fresh Salads Island: Real-Time Intelligence and Refreshed Databases!
No main course is complete without sides that bring out the flavor. On this island, we find new features that add freshness and versatility.
Side 1: Tropical Real-Time Events Salad (Real-Time Intelligence)
Fabric’s Real-Time Intelligence area received ingredients that bring more agility to analyzing data that can’t wait. Highlights include full integration of Azure Monitor data sources with KQL Queryset, improvements to the low-code data exploration experience, and a new weather connector in Eventstream. It’s a true “tropical salad,” with components that add value through their ability to capture and analyze events the moment they happen.
Side 2: Rustic Potatoes with Fine Herbs (SQL Database in Fabric)
The SQL Database service in Fabric was also enhanced with improvements: support for new regions, backup billing updates, a performance dashboard for monitoring, and expanded support for Terraform, REST APIs, and the CLI, as well as integrations and graph database support. These updates make SQL Database in Fabric even more “flavorful and versatile,” like those well-made rustic potatoes that go nicely with all kinds of dishes thanks to their reliability and heartiness.
The Chef’s Surprise: The Unexpected Dessert!
To wrap up, a special dessert to round out the meal.
Dessert: Connectivity Lava Cake with a Snowflake Filling (Mirroring for Snowflake with Firewall - Preview)
The Mirroring for Snowflake feature, which was already interesting, now gets a special “filling”: support for firewall protection (in Preview). That allows a more secure, robust integration with one of the leading data systems on the market, like a lava cake that combines different textures and flavors of secure, efficient connectivity.
Conclusion: A Banquet to Leave You Satisfied (and Eager for the Next One!)
Microsoft Fabric’s April buffet really came with plenty of options for different tastes and needs, from the democratization of AI, through robust tools for data engineering and data science, to real-time innovations and improved connectivity. Each new feature is an invitation to explore and discover how it can optimize and enrich your work with data.
Now the invitation is out: explore this menu, try the “dishes” that caught your interest the most, and see how they can transform your routine, bringing more efficiency and insights to your projects. Microsoft Fabric will certainly keep bringing new features in the coming months.
Until the next article!
